Veterans Making a Difference plans to reopen social center

Reading Eagle - 9/13/2020

Sep. 13--It wasn't the last Saturday of the month, when Veterans Making A Difference usually runs its food pantry for veterans. But after receiving an extra donation one day earlier, Liz and Doug Graybill were happy to feed friendly faces, anyway.

Two weeks ahead of schedule, about 40 veterans lined up to collect free lunches outside the Paul R. Gordon Veteran Social Center at the Hope Rescue Mission in Reading.

The lunches were prepared by volunteers from the American Legion in Oley.

Liz, a retired Army veteran, and Doug, a Marine Corps veteran, are doing a lot more than handing out food, paper goods and socks to fellow former military personnel in need of a hand though.

The couple share a camaraderie with many of people they help through the nonprofit Veterans Making A Difference, Liz Graybill said.

The Graybills are also looking forward to reopening the social center soon, too.

Closed since the coronavirus reached Berks County, preparations such as plexiglass at the serving counter and hand sanitizing stations are being made to allow veterans back inside, even if at reduced capacity.

A date has not yet been set for reopening the Paul R. Gordon Veteran Social Center, but it's anticipated "in the very near future," Liz said.
