---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: KASPAR is a prototype child-size humanoid robot designed by the Adaptive Systems Research Group at the University of Herforshire. KASPAR allows children with intellectual and emotional disabilities to develop social skills for solitary and cooperative play, especially in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Currently KASPAR has 8 degrees of freedom in the head and neck and 6 in the arms and hands. The face is a silicon-rubber mask which is supported on an aluminum frame. While not entirely realistic in appearance, KASPAR does have 2 DOF eyes fitted with video cameras, and a mouth capable of opening and smiling. Additional research (ROBOSKIN Project) plans to develop new skin sensor technologies that will be able to provide tactile feedback from large areas of the robot body. Data from this research will be used to improve human-robot interaction capabilities of robot assisted play in children with Autism. TITLE: European robots assist children in forming relationships.
