Food bank offers distribution to veterans, military families at armory

Tribune-Democrat - 2/18/2018

Feb. 18--Back in October, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank distributed food to about 125 households -- in the Johnstown area -- that had at least one member who was actively in the military or a veteran.

A second event is scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday, at the National Guard Armory in Richland Township, during which the group expects that number to increase to at least 150.

"Folks have been able to see the benefits," said Tom Melton, special distributions coordinator for the organization that serves Cambria, Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, and Butler counties.

The households, which needed to sign up in advance, will receive free nonperishable items, along with fresh produce, eggs and proteins.

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank plans to hold another local distribution event for military personnel and veterans, possibly in April or May. The nonprofit also distributes food in other ways, including through the Produce to People program, which is active in the Johnstown region.

"We're trying to reach people that we know need assistance and need that additional help," Beth Burrell, the organization's communications and public relations manager, said.
